Family History Hobart Branch

The Society main aim is to foster family history research. It is a non-profit, non-sectarian, non-political organisation that enables members to share interests in tracing family history and learn from personal contact with others.

The Tasmanian Family History Society Inc. (TFHS) is a non-profit, non-sectarian, non-political organisation formed in Hobart in 1980, with the main aim the fostering of research into family history. Membership is open to all persons interested in genealogy, local history heraldry and related topics and since its inception has grown to around 1200 members with the majority Tasmanian residents but many in all Australian states, New Zealand, United Kingdom, United States and elsewhere.
The TFHS Hobart Branch has the largest membership of the five branches operating throughout Tasmania and has its Library and Office centred in the “Old Bellerive Post Office”, rented from the Clarence Council. The Library holds a wide range of resource material, some not available at other libraries, on microfiche, hard copy papers and books, CDs and computers, available to the Library’s patrons.
The management and operation of the TFHS relies almost exclusively on volunteers to provide Library services, regular newsletters, periodicals (including the quarterly Tasmanian Ancestry now at Volume 34) and various history research projects.
